"Tomorrow morning," the surgeon began, "I'll open up your heart..."
"You'll find Jesus there," the boy interrupted.
The surgeon looked up, annoyed "I'll cut your heart open," he continued, "to see how much damage has been done..."
"But when you open up my heart, you'll find Jesus in there," said the boy.
The surgeon looked to the parents, who sat quietly. "When I see how much damage has been done, I'll sew your heart and chest back up, and I'll plan what to do next."
"But you'll find Jesus in my heart. The Bible says He lives there. The hymns all say He lives there. You'll find Him in my heart."
The surgeon had had enough. "I'll tell you what I'll find in your heart. I'll find damaged muscle, low blood supply, and weakened vessels. And I'll find out if I can make you well."
"You'll find Jesus there too. He lives there."
The surgeon left.
The surgeon sat in his office, recording his notes from the surgery, "...damaged aorta, damaged pulmonary vein, wide spread muscle degeneration. No hope for transplant, no hope for cure. Therapy: painkillers and bed rest. Prognosis: here he paused, "death within one year."
He stopped the recorder, but there was more to be said. "Why?" he asked aloud. "Why did You do this? You've put him here; You've put him in this pain; and You've cursed him to an early death. Why?"
The Lord answered and said, "The boy, my lamb, was not meant for your flock for long, for he is a part of My flock, and will forever be. Here, in My flock, he will feel no pain, and will be comforted as you cannot imagine. His parents will one day join him here, and they will know peace, and My flock will continue to grow..."
The surgeon's tears were hot, but his anger was hotter. "You created that boy, and You created that heart. He'll be dead in months. Why?"
The Lord answered, "The boy, My lamb, shall return to My flock, for He has done his duty: I did not put My lamb with your flock to lose him, but to retrieve another lost lamb."
The surgeon wept...
The surgeon sat beside the boy's bed; the boy's parents sat across from him. The boy awoke and whispered, "Did you cut open my heart?"
"Yes," said the surgeon.
"What did you find?" asked the boy.
"I found Jesus there," said the surgeon.

Last night I attended a football game at my high school alma mater. I attended for two reasons: (1) my son and my husband wanted to go AND (2) I had arranged to see a friend from high school who I had not seen in 30+ years! It was hot and humid and my arthritic joints were not happy about sitting on those hard bleachers. But I was happy--happy to be reunited with a friend from the past. We chatted about our lives between then and now and we recalled the then.
My advise--take time to find a good friend from the past and reconnect, even for just a brief moment in time. It will take you back to a time when those arthritic joints didn't exist as such! |

I know it's still September, but I can't keep from thinking about October. October is my favorite month. Here in NW Florida, if we are not having a "tropical event" (aka hurricane), the weather is absolutely gorgeous! We enjoy sunny days with clear blue skies punctuated by white, puffy clouds. The extreme heat of summer has passed. The temperature is perfect for outdoor activities. The waters of the Gulf of Mexico are still comfortable for taking a swim or for just getting your feet wet as you walk along the sugar white sand beach.
October is a busy month for Destin and the surrounding communities. The first weekend of the month is the annual seafood festival. Folks come from all over to enjoy a weekend filled with entertainment, shopping and great seafood! The annual Destin fishing rodeo is held during October with the seafood festival being the "kick off" event for the month long fishing extravaganza. Destin claims to be "The Luckiest Fishing Village" and once upon a time about the only thing there was to do in Destin was go fishing! Times have changed. I tell people that the five main attractions of the area now are THE BEACH, shopping, dining, fishing and golfing. If you enjoy any or all of these activities, Destin/Miramar Beach in October is the place to be!
Another aspect of October that I love is college football. I am a faithful Auburn Tiger fan, being a proud graduate of the class of 1979. My husband is an avid Florida Gator fan by choice. My son, Luke, loves football. Period. So for the most part, our October Saturday's revolve around the college football TV schedule! And late in October, I sometimes experience a déjà vu moment from my days on campus at Auburn--the touch of a gentle breeze, or the way the air smells! Oh, I get chill bumps just thinking about it!
Thanks for sharing a moment with me and my October meanderings. Happy October! |
